Excellent performance by the Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Team on Saturday at Assen. In Race 1 Can Oncu took third position and thus the podium, while Aldi Mahendra can celebrate a P8 that represents his first top ten of the season.
After fine-tuning the last details in the Warm Up, which ended respectively in third and tenth position, Oncu and Mahendra took part in Race 1, run over a reduced distance of 12 laps due to an earlier red flag. Can got off to an excellent start from pole position, immediately gaining ground on his rivals, who were able to catch him up in the second half of the race. In the final part of the race the Turkish rider gave life to a beautiful duel for second position with Manzi, taking third place under the chequered flag. For Can it’s his second podium finish of the season.
Very positive start also for Aldi Mahendra, who was able to recover four positions in just one lap. As the race went on, the Indonesian rider maintained his pace and concentration, even fighting for a place in the top five, until he finished eighth. For Aldi this is the first race in World Supersport that he has finished in the top ten, confirming his great growth.
Tomorrow Race 2 will be staged, with the start at 15.15 CET and 18 laps to run. By virtue of the fastest laps set in Race 1 Oncu will start from fifth position and Mahendra from P9.
Aldi Mahendra
“I am really happy with this first top ten in Supersport. I gave my best, I felt good on the bike so I could push throughout the race. Tomorrow I will be able to start further ahead on the grid so hopefully I can get another top ten, or maybe even something more. I thank the team for their great work as I am keep improving”.
Can Oncu
“Honestly the red flag didn't help us, as for the second start we decided to change the tyres and maybe we didn't make the right choice. In the second part of the race I was not able to express myself as I would have liked, but a podium is still something to celebrate. Tomorrow I hope to be back on the podium, maybe improving on today's result”.
Fabio Evangelista (Team Principal)
“I am very satisfied with today's results. Despite the fantastic pole I knew it wouldn't have been easy for Can to win: he had a great race, including a nice final duel with Manzi, and this third place is really valuable. I am equally satisfied with Aldi's race, who despite still struggling physically handled the race very well and took a brilliant eighth place. I am very happy for him, he deserved such a result”.
Oncu takes a beautiful podium in Race 1 at Assen, comeback and first top 10 for Mahendra
